BEARTOOTH AT CONCRETE STREET AMPHITHEATER IN CORPUS CHRISTI
Silverstein. The Devil Wears Prada. Caleb Shomo. For those who made it out to the hot summer shows on the Warped Tour, those names probably bring back fond memories of metalcore in its heyday. This time, however, Caleb Shomo has taken Beartooth to a level he never reached before, and put together what could be the tour of the year for the genre. Oh, and you can’t forget about Erra, who have been on the rise after a few hot releases over the past few years. The lineup made its way to the coastal city of Corpus Christi, Texas after a few years of each band not coming through due to the pandemic and simply as a result of being a smaller market.
The fans in attendance made it evident early on that they were excited to finally have these bands back in town, getting moving as soon as Erra took the stage. They played what felt like a blazing quick 25-minutes, setting the stage for the Devil Wears Prada who followed suit.
For a band that’s been around as long as Prada, it was strange to see them hit the stage so early, but that’s not a knock on them. Each band on the lineup is more than worthy enough to headline a tour of their own. After a set that included newer songs and fan favorites like “Danger: Wildman”, Prada gave the crowd a treat when they closed with a track for all the OG fans: “Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over”.
Up next were Silverstein, whose 45-minute set showcased a nice taste of their upcoming album, Misery Made Me, out in a few weeks. Fans were even treated to a mid-set surprise from Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo, who joined the band for “Vices”.
As Silverstein concluded, a white curtain was hung from the rafters, and the stage was set for the pinnacle of the night: Beartooth. A spotlight hit the stage and Caleb Shomo belted the opening lines to “Below”, before the rest of the band joined in an epic moment where the curtain dropped and a blast of confetti rained over the crowd.
The band, and particularly Shomo, came out with a burst of energy right from the jump, and kept that energy as they made their way through the career-spanning setlist. Fans got a nice treat mid-set when the band performed “Body Bag”, “The Lines”, and “Beaten in Lips”, three standout tracks from their debut album, Disgusting.
As if the performance itself wasn’t extravagant enough, the stage production further highlighted just how far the band and Shomo have come. With a giant video screen, an almost sky-high drum riser, and an epic light show, the band made sure to pull out all the stops.
After an almost hour and half performance, the band finally closed with “The Last Riff”, a fitting ending that mirrors the bands latest release, and the perfect song to cap off a night filled with heavy music.
For Beartooth and Shomo, it seems like nothing less than an honor for them to have the opportunity to take bands like Silverstein and TDWP out on tour, after they paved the way for the genre to grow to the size it is today.
