REAL ESTATE AT THE CHAPEL IN SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Friday evening was night two of a three-day residency for Real Estate, who played sold out shows at The Chapel in San Francisco. For those who haven’t come across Real Estate’s work, you’re in for a treat. If you’re looking for something to listen to while you’re relaxing around your house on a rainy Sunday morning, going for a late-night cruise with the windows down, or just enjoying whatever vice it is that you fancy, look no further. Real Estate’s sound is one that has a way of sweeping you off your feet and carrying you off into the night. Their clean and jangly guitar tones swimmingly move throughout songs as the frequent prog rock drum beats and bass lines help lift up Martin Courtney’s mellow and laid-back lead vocals.
My personal recommendation of songs to check out can be found in this Spotify playlist.
The first half of their set comprised of songs from their last 3 albums, In Mind, Atlas, and Days, while the end of their set featured some new material that they have yet to release. We’re quickly approaching two years since their latest release, which leads me to believe that Real Estate was solely using the audience of these three shows as a sounding board to see how well the new material would be received.
With no current information about future records or tours, I think it’s fair to say that the boys are somewhere in the writing and recording process where they are still feeling out what works and what doesn’t. I think we can expect some new content from Real Estate sometime this year.
Austin Newkirk is a San Francisco Bay Area photographer. You’ll likely find him in one of three places - out at the beach with his dog, Ky, at a brewery sipping on a stout, or out shooting your next favorite band.
