KIM PETRAS AT THE UNDERGROUND IN CHARLOTTE
People filtered into The Underground dressed to the nines to see Kim Petras on her “Clarity Tour”. There was no shortage of heels, glitter, and rhinestones that night. A large contingent from the Charlotte drag and LGBTQ+ were in attendance for the performance of the queer icon and they ready to party. A DJ got the night started with a great mix of pop songs, old and new. After the crowd was thoroughly warmed up it was time for the main event.
Petras graced the stage with her single, “Clarity”. The fans went wild when she stood at the top of her stage build ups with spotlights on her as she soaked in the moment. She appeased her audience by reaching across the pit and taking the hands of a few lucky people as she sauntered across the stage. After the first few songs the show ramped up a bit when she had an outfit change into a vintage bathing suit look for her glitzy song, “I Don’t Want It At All”.
The show continued in what I would describe as “segments”, because for the next segment she had another wardrobe change to transition into her Halloween inspired hits. Her stage lighting was very clever in the way that her LED panels were able to depict some small “pictures” for this transition. It started off with white crosses that then turned upside down and switched to red. The crowd was living for it, as Petras had described, “Halloween is like Christmas for the gays”. She had a rotating platform on stage that she would pose on while singing, adding another element to her stellar performance. I was impressed with the amount she was able to pack into a relatively small space.
Following another wardrobe change and acoustic rendition of “Human” by The Killers, Kim gave away the shirt she was wearing to reveal a diamond covered bodysuit/dress number. She wowed the crowd with “Icy” before closing out the set with the audience singing back to her “Can’t Do Better”. Overall it was an amazing production. Her lighting, outfit changes, and stage design made for a very entertaining show. I highly recommend going to a show. It was one of the best crowds I’ve been in in a while.
