LORNA SHORE AT HOUSE OF INDEPENDENTS IN ASBURY PARK
House of Independents in Asbury Park was vibrating with excitement as the crowd started filling up the floor. New Jersey deathcore natives Lorna Shore were playing their first show back in their home state, and it was sold out. The small run of shows was initially announced to celebrate the release of their newest EP ...And I Return to Nothingness. The EP’s release date actually happened to fall on the day of the Asbury Park show (give it a listen if you haven’t already - it’s amazing). Aside from the buzz of the EP, attendees were also waiting in anticipation to finally see Lorna perform with their new vocalist Will Ramos.
The band opened their set up by playing the three tracks off the new EP, “To the Hellfire”, “Of the Abyss”, and “...And I Return to Nothingness”. The minute fans heard the intro of “To the Hellfire”, the crowd was immediately amped up. We all knew what was coming - what I like to call “the breakdown heard round the world”. It was the breakdown that inspired the community to participate in the “Lorna Shore Challenge”, in which tons of covers were recorded of people showing off just how brutal they could sound. If you’ve listened to the track you know exactly what I’m talking about. Towards the end of the song there is a lull in instrumentals when the vocals take front and center with the lyrics,
“My final breath, swallowed by the womb of death”
In addition to heavy lows and breakdowns throughout this section, shortly after Will Ramos snarls out vocals (literally the gnarliest snarling noises) before another series of lows that rattle your bones. The absolute power of this delivered in the live performance was jaw dropping. Everything about Lorna’s performance at this show was honestly breathtaking. The instrumentals were some of the tightest I’ve heard live and Will’s vocals were so consistently controlled the whole performance. An interesting thing to note is that on stage there was no bass guitar, just a rhythm and lead guitar. Their sound however, was massive. Andrew O’ Connor (rhythm guitar) and Adam De Micco (lead guitar) were absolutely shredding, and drummer Austin Archey was so in the zone.
The set itself was quite short. After the EP tracks, the band played other songs such as “Death Portrait”, “King ov Deception”, and “This is Hell”. Fans opened up a massive pit on the floor, and were crowd surfing and stage diving as they normally would. The band ended their set with “Immortal” and left a big impression on the crowd, establishing themselves as being back and not ready to mess around. Lorna Shore will be touring more this upcoming fall with support from Enterprise Earth, Sentinels, and Crown Magnetar. I highly recommend making it out to one of their shows - you will be blown away.
