MAGGIE ROGERS AT 713 MUSIC HALL IN HOUSTON
Three years after a COVID halted tour kept us from seeing her for the first time in Houston, massive pop star Maggie Rogers made her mark in the city. I can unapologetically say there's no better way to spend a Saturday night than at a Maggie Rogers show.
Houston was the three-quarter stop on the “Feral Joy Tour” and it's obvious that Maggie and her band are completely locked in. The performance was incredibly energetic and since the last time I have seen Rogers live (2019) it's also apparent just how refined she's made both her live sets, as well as her stage presence. With that being said, she's always been an amazing performer and has always had unmatched energy, just this time it's like seeing her at her final form. As a longtime Maggie fan, I couldn't help but beam with pride to see where she's at after the last 7-8 years.
Maggie's set consisted of a large majority of it being songs from her newest release, Surrender, combined with older loved hits from HIIPL. She happened to throw in a surprise performance of my favorite song, "Retrograde", and mixed in her own rendition of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" toward the end of it that had the entire venue screaming out in unison. Screaming out in unison was, without a doubt, the theme of the night at this show. Maggie made the stage and the entire venue feel like a place where you could have some kind of cathartic release and many of us definitely had that. You could look out anywhere and see any group of friends, a couple, or a single person screaming the words to every song.
The Houston show was a perfect example of Maggie Rogers' genius as a musician and a creator. She continues to get better and better as the years go on, and I for one cannot wait to see what she does next. If she's coming to your city you can't miss her.
