MATT MAESON AT THE UNDERGROUND IN CHARLOTTE

MATT MAESON AT THE UNDERGROUND IN CHARLOTTE

For a Monday evening in Charlotte, I expected a fairly low key night, however I would quickly be proven wrong. Fans steadily filed into The Fillmore as The Technicolors opened up for Matt Maeson. Hosted by local radio station, 106.5 The End, radio personality Palmer came on stage to introduce the artist, and dubbed it Matt Maeson Monday in the Queen City. Matt, armed with his guitar, drummer and keyboardist/ guitarist, started off the performance with a couple songs, “Tread On Me”, and “I Just Don’t Care That Much” from the newly released album, Bank On The Funeral.

Lined along the barricade were rows of fans, all very attentive and singing along with the musician. After the first three songs, the ensemble left the stage and Maeson continued with an acoustic break, singing “The Hearse”, “Feel Good”, and “Cliffy”. The crowd seemed to sway and flow to the music. All attention was on the stage. I also noticed a lack of cellphones in the air which was a nice contrast to most shows I have attended this year; people really seemed to be living in the moment. Following the acoustic segment, Matt made an announcement that most of his family was at this show standing in the audience among everyone which made the show seem even more special.

For the popular song “Cringe” the audience all came together as one, and many of the female patrons were singing along and truly feeling the song. His vocals are on par with his studio voice and stripped versions of his songs. It was a treat to hear an artist who lives up to the recorded versions of themselves. Overall, the show was a bit more laid back than I am used to attending but it was a nice night and I recommend catching Matt Maeson on tour if he is coming to a city nearby.
