SNOOP DOGG AT THE WELLMONT THEATRE IN MONTCLAIR
Walking into The Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ was like stepping out of a time machine, heavy smoke included (and I’m not talking from a smoke machine if you catch my drift). Snoop Dogg brought in a sold out crowd for his “I Wanna Thank Me Tour”, and fans of the legendary rap artist were in for an exciting night.
When our “Uncle Snoop” took the stage, he had a pretty simple, yet exciting set up. A DJ booth sat in front of a large screen, giant fake blunt that lit up the words “Dogg Talk and sat on top of a picnic table with blue and red bandanas, and most importantly, two poles sat on either side of the stage. He walked out with a blunt the size of a Cuban cigar and immediately starting blowing smoke up into the air for the crowd. He opened up the show with “What U Talkin’ Bout” and the crowd immediately started dancing and singing along. Throughout the performance he had dancers and women using the poles to dance. It was honestly incredible to watch the way everything worked together on stage. He performed crowd favorites such as “Doggystyle”, “Sensual Seduction”, and “Drop It Like It’s Hot”. Snoop’s enunciation is fantastic and you can clearly understand every word he was rapping. Towards the end there was a really beautiful tribute to rapper Nipsy Hussle and then some covers paying homage to N.W.A., The Notorious B.I.G., and Tupac. Throughout the night as I looked around I saw so many smiling faces dancing and singing. Not even security could stay still as I watched them join in off to the sides.
Snoop Dogg ended his set with a performance of “Young, Wild & Free”. He had the lyrics up on the screen behind him while leading the audience in a good old-fashioned group sing-along. If you’ve never been to a rap show, I cannot recommend seeing Snoop Dogg enough. If the “I Wanna Thank Me Tour” is hitting a city near you soon, definitely make sure to get out for it!
