THE FRANKLIN ELECTRIC AT LA BOULE NOIRE IN PARIS

THE FRANKLIN ELECTRIC AT LA BOULE NOIRE IN PARIS

We had the date highlighted on our calendars for some weeks, now. The Canadian band, The Franklin Electric, added a last concert in Paris to their European tour. After a busy weekend in the French capital (The Pitchfork festival took place the same weekend), we ended the week in the best way possible, at La Boule Noire.

At the very beginning of the night, GOOM played an early set of 30 minutes. The Parisian band is mixing influences of jazzy rhythms, folk and rock music. They performed several of their compositions and a cover song. It was a beautiful start of the night.

During their several week long European tour, The Franklin Electric was joined by Nina June, a songwriter and singer from the Netherlands. Only joined by her pianist on stage, she played songs from her first album, ‘Bon Voyage’, that came out last year. Her voice accompanied heartfelt piano melodies, sometimes recalling the Agnes Obel musical universe, with a slight twist of electronic beats added to the mix. The duo had a powerful presence on stage, establishing a vibrant yet soothing atmosphere in the small Parisian venue. The moment of the last song of the show, and the last song of the tour came too quickly for us and for the duo. It’s a promise to ourselves - we will see Nina June for a headlining show in the near future and we encourage you to do the same at the next opportunity available.

It was finally time for the Canadian lads in The Franklin Electric to take the stage. The Franklin Electric performed a nifty show, playing songs from their last EP, ‘In Your Head’, as well as early creations from several years ago. They perfectly set the pace for their performance. They came down the stage once to play in the middle of the crowd, giving us the intimate feeling of a bonfire concert, only to be rocking the next song with a contagious energy and dancing around. It’s difficult to put a label on their music, as their songs go from a voice-guitar ballad to a full band rock piece with a punchy energy.

The Franklin Electric are more known in Canada, and used to playing bigger venues. It is appreciated to see them in a small venue in Paris. There’s a sensibility and a more powerful emotion that come from the intimate setting. After a very requested encore, the band finally left the stage under applause. Here again, the last song of their EU tour has something special.

New Scene Production set up a beautiful night of alternative indie pop-rock. Seeing the new EP of The Franklin Electric on stage was a real pleasure and we can’t wait for them to come back.
