WALK THE MOON AT COLLEGE STREET MUSIC HALL IN NEW HAVEN
You know when you’re having an amazing dream, and you never want it to end? That’s exactly how I feel at every Walk The Moon concert I’ve ever been to, and if you haven’t experienced one yet, please treat yourself to a show on their “Dream Plane Tour” which just kicked off last week!
It’s no secret that Walk The Moon (WTM) oozes with energy on stage, especially lead singer Nicholas Petricca, who dances around nonstop. It truly has me questioning how someone can have that much stamina while singing such impressive notes. The night started off with a few songs from their second album, Talking Is Hard, and the crowd instantly knew all the words. “Giants” and “Fire In Your House” came next, giving us a nice look into WTM’s upcoming fourth studio album, HEIGHTS.
“One Foot” was another crowd favorite right before WTM’s first album took over the setlist. “Tightrope”, one of my personal favorites, spurred some fun audience interaction with Nick guiding everyone to wave their arms on beat, and raising up jazz hands during the chorus. As the song faded out, the guys stopped singing and listened to the crowd echoing the “whoas” in awe. Next up was an acoustic rendition of “Kamikaze” accompanied only by the keys, but still had us moving and grooving.
Warm yellow and orange lights glowed around the room for “Can You Handle My Love??”, the band’s newest single. A truly unexpected surprise was when the “I Can Lift A Car” intro bounced throughout the venue. This took me back to my first WTM show at Terminal 5 in New York when Nick hopped up on the barricade, walking along grabbing onto fan’s hands to keep himself upright. It’s a therapeutic experience listening to this song live, especially after the band introduces it telling us to release everything we’ve kept bottled up inside and to just push it out through our arms.
Before the encore, Eli took a second to mention a particular detail he noticed. He spotted WTM’s merch throughout the crowd, but not just the merch from this show. Merch from the first tour, from the Timebomb era, from their “The Universe” line. “It lets me know you are with us! It means so much, it just means so much. Thank you,” he said before their final song. Excitement erupted for “Anna Sun” leaving everyone out of breath, sweaty, and with the biggest smiles plastered on their face.
