YOU ME AND EVERYONE WE KNOW RELEASE NEW RECORD 'SOMETHING HEAVY'
After being gone for almost a decade, you me and everyone we know (YM&EWK) released their new record, Something Heavy. The band started as the brainchild of lead vocalist, Benjamin Liebsch.
The first track “I Don’t Care Anymore, I’m Enough Now”, starts immediately with Benjamin screaming in your face demanding your attention. Not only is it a great opening track with fun gang vocals, but it really sets the stage for what is to come on the record, showing what this album is going to be about: mental health, gender identity, addiction, and the ever collapsing world around us. The chaotic noise behind the fast vocals makes this song and its themes seem as urgent as ever.
One song that immediately grabbed my attention was the third song, “draggedacrossconcrete” which features Colins Regisford of Mannequin Pussy. In one part of the song, they spell dragged and it sort of reminds me of pop punk from the 2000’s.
The first single from the record, and the now fourth track, is titled “(Still) Basically A God”. The song starts with vocalist Benjamin saying, “reading the body keeps the score” which is a book about trauma and mental health. They also talk about ignoring clear symptoms of your mental health and health deteriorating. The entirety of the song, YM&EWK show you the unfurling and dealing with trauma through lyrics and the band. Benjamin even says he can feel themselves coming apart through “mortal coils starting to unfurl”.
The title track, “Something Heavy” is a fun video of Benjamin Liebsch writing lyrics on a white wall around the title in the middle while they sing the words. This is a song that immediately gets stuck in your head and is definitely my favorite, but there really isn’t a bad track on the album. Every track covers something and is delivered in a pop punk/ indie way that is very enticing.
