SOCCER MOMMY AT EMO'S IN AUSTIN

SOCCER MOMMY AT EMO'S IN AUSTIN

On Friday, Oct. 22, Soccer Mommy rolled into Austin, Texas to finally give fans their first performance in the city since releasing their 2020 album, color theory.

Opening the show was Austin-local alexalone, a five-piece ambient rock group. The lights really helped set the mood for the atmospheric, mostly-instrumental group as they played for their hometown.

Then came the main act of the night:  Soccer Mommy. The band took the stage and vocalist/guitar player Sophia Allison got the show going as she played the opening chords of “bloodstream”, the leading track off of color theory.

They kept the new tracks coming, and the crowd (myself included) was particularly excited to hear “circle the drain”, their leading single off of the latest album.

As the night went on, Soccer Mommy went a little deeper into their catalog to play “Cool”, a personal favorite of mine off 2018’s Clean. I couldn’t help but join the crowd as they bobbed their heads and sang along.

Soon after, they went back into the new material with “crawling in my skin”. The upbeat drums and lead guitar took the crowd for a ride. As the song came to an end, they extended the outro and jammed louder and louder as the lights flickered. This was a highlight of the show for me.

The band then slowed it down with some of the slower tracks off of the latest album. Then, Allison stayed on stage to perform a few songs solo. Emotion filled the room as the crowd sang along to still clean”.

The rest of the band returned and “closed” the set with the 7-minute, stand-out track off the new album, “yellow is the color of her eyes”. Of course the band would soon return to the stage to close out the night with fan-favorites, “Your Dog” and “Scorpio Rising”.

After following the band online for a few years, it was surreal to see them playing in such a big room filled with people. Clearly, the pandemic didn’t hurt their momentum since releasing color theory, and I expect bigger and bigger crowds as their career goes on.
